This year my in-depth study will be on beatboxing. Beatboxing is a form of vocal percussion in the style of hip hop. Vocal percussion is creating sounds with the mouth that mimics the sound and purpose of a percussion instrument. In beatboxing, not only to you imitate a classic drum set, but you can also mimic the sounds of turntables, brass instruments, guitars, and electronic effects such as a siren.
I wasn’t even at the best singer, but I always wanted to be a part of an acapella group. Percussion is always needed in an ensemble to keep a beat, but in acapella, it is not easy to find someone to do so (other than snaps or claps). In the summer I realized I can do basic beats with my mouth and I thought I would be could this in my project and enhance my abilities.
Who (Mentor)? / Where? / How?
I will getting lessons by the very multi-talented Liam, and it will be held at his house. In the beginning, it will be a lot of experimenting and getting to know what sounds my mouth can make. I will then associate each sound with a drum or other instrument and then practice “playing” the instrument in such patterns or ways.
Some things I do wish to achieve in this project, is to be able to Mimic the complete sounds of a classic drum set, and to create sounds by both inhaling and exhaling, allowing constant practising without having to take an actual breath.
For a Final Project, I am thinking of making an acapella video of Bruno Mars’s “The Other Side” featuring Cee Lo Green and B.o.B, as it has a very unique drum solo at the end, and overall a very unique drum part.
I am looking forward to doing this project.
